Hey all,

I have a situation... My wife paid another performing artist to create a website for her, which in their arrangements included hosting.
For my understanding this is a work for hire, since he would not have made this website otherwise, without her payment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_for_hire

Now that the registry of her URL is coming up, he does not want to send us the files for the site so we can reload it onto the hosting plan that I have for my websites. He claims it is not their policy to release files. We like the base design, while the mystery meat navigation is slow and buggy, the base of the design is nice. We offered to keep his design credits unless a complete overhaul occurs, since we like the visual layout. For my knowledge, my wife paid for:
1. graphic design of the site
2. hosting from web release until this summer, seperately from basic design cost
3. registry of her URL, which was put in her name under his business.

What to do?
Do we keep the base design and re-script the back-end if he chooses to not send the files of the complete site?
What exactly are you buying when you contract for a site to be built, if not the files that comprise the site?
Recommendations?

Many thanks,
MT

I am currently going to college and frankly I sometimes I feel like I am not getting much out of it. The instructors seem to leave us on our own and expect us to get it all right the first time. Also, they seem to lean more towards a pro-business, pro-corporate side of the field. It's something I am not too into. I am more interested in the artistic and creative side. My overall goal is get together with 2 or 3 other like minded designers and start our own collective.

I was wondering if anybody has done this and what tips they might have? I am not happy with the current situation I find myself in. Thanks in advance.

I already have the job. I'm working in the field. But I feel like I'm really a little behind the times (I started out cutting color separations and stripping negs, if any of you remember that), and I KNOW I'm not using the software to its best possible advantage. Most of my work is print -- designing medical forms and a few identity pieces, and running prepress work on other designer's stuff -- but I'd like to branch out and do more creative work for our customers.

There isn't really a program of night classes offered here at the college, so I'm looking at something online. I looked at sessions.edu a while back because they covered digital illustration and some stuff that looked interesting. I have specific skills in form design, but I'm looking for more generic graphic design (print or web) and I'd like a program that has a lot of options like that.

I don't need a job, so I don't need placement services or anything like that, but I want to know that whatever program I choose it will be a good value. I'm thinking a certificate program would be nice, just to have some gold star to work towards :)

So -- suggestions? Does anybody have any horror stories about any of the programs out there? Any one you'd personally recommend? I'm not looking for another degree, but I'm not adverse to taking the course load for one.

What's the best of the online options? Thanks in advance!

When: TBD
Cost: TBD

Artists, Models, and Other Creatively-Wired Individuals,

We are putting together a group of people interested in honing their life drawing and/or modeling skills.

ARTISTS:
As there will be no official teacher for the class this is meant for people who are comfortable being self-directed artists. However, if you wish, people of varying skill levels and experience can help and guide each other.

MODELS:
We value diversity so all types of models are encouraged to join regardless of sex, gender, ethnicity, body type. Ideally we would have a good mix of different kinds of models as well as artists
What we offer is a modern and clean studio (with a bathroom) in safe part of SF 4 blocks away from Powell BART

As of today we have these time slots available:
Mondays: 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Tuesdays: 8:30 AM-12:00 PM, 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Wednesdays: 1:00 PM-4:00 PM
Fridays: 7:30 PM-9:30 PM
Saturdays: 3:30 PM-9:30 PM
Sundays: 11:00 AM-8:00 PM

Ideally we would like to have a sizable group or groups that meet regularly so that we can make it worthwhile for everyone involved.

If you are interested please let me know:
1. If you are a model, artist, or both
2. You schedule preferences

If you know other people that might be interested please pass this along to them. If you have any further questions please contact me at my email or tribe.
Does anyone have advice or a link to advice on how to go about doing this?

I would be so happy to see one of my illustrations on a book cover, I would practically give it away for free. (laughing)

I'm interested in submitting material to a new age / occult book publisher like Lewellyn or New Falcon.
How would I go about approaching them with my work, if it would even be possible? Thanks for any advice.

I am a graphic artist in Puerto Rico. Digital printing costs are really high here and I usually print 4x6 flyers and business cards in Miami, with PK Graphics. I am considering the idea of becoming a "print broker"..a new term for me. basically, regardless of wether I design the artwork or not..I could be the middle man between clients and printers. I found Zoo Printing, which gives great trade rates, but they are in CA and don't ship to PR. They print in quantities of less that 5,000. Pk only does 5,000 or more, gang run. Anyway, my question is..

Does anyone know of a good digital printer in the FLA area (it's closest to where I live, so shipping should be less), than gives good print brokerage prices?

All responses appreciated. Thank you!

The business one will be primarily on the web, and the school one will have to be submitted in print.

I am well versed in Photoshop, but not great with Image Ready or slices for making web content. I am also quite proficient in InDesign. I'm *just* starting to learn Dreamweaver.
QUESTION: What's the best way to present both graphics and text content for both web and print without having to construct new files for each format?

I was thinking thinking of using Photoshop/ImageReady to make a file and then save it in two versions (print and web-optimized). Or could I make files in InDesign that could be used for the web, since there will be lots of text?

As an artisan I have two categories I work in, digital illustration and commercial graphic design. I have chosen to freely share my digital illustration with anyone whom would like a print. I have plenty of commercial clients to satisfy my financial needs, plus I know I will always have all of needs met in every way before I have even asked. I love sharing my digital illustration because when a person is drawn to a piece incidental love is created and the love of creation is reflected back to me. And I love, LOVE!

I have uploaded a large selection of my digital art in hi resolution format to shutterfly.com, I have also set up a page their to access and order the prints. They offer everything from 4x6 prints to 24x36 inch prints in amazing detail and color. You can even create your very own Seth D8 art book of your favorite pieces, all for very reasonable rates. The only cost involved is the production of the prints, and I do not get a cut or add a commission to the service. It is at cost, and my art is completely free for personal use.

Please feel free and browse my current selection and get prints of anything you like, and the best part is you get to be part of the creative process by choosing exactly the correct size and media to suit your need. I will be uploading new hi resolution images a couple times a month so be sure and subscribe to my new Artisantastic illustration RSS feed. When I produce a new image it is immeaditly added to the feed, so you will always be up to date with my latest creations. And believe me I am a prolific artist creating new pieces on a daily basis.

I love my job. I love working as a graphic designer. However, one of the bad things about being in the web design industry and workin' your butt off is that you dump all your creative energies into a client's work and not have a ton for your own. I've got neat domain names, various site drafts, no content yet, and by the time I get home, I just want to sit down, crack a beer and turn my brain off.

So I pose this question: How do you go about re-energizing yourself? Meditation? Another shot of espresso? What re-inspires you as a designer in the digital age?

So, we're opening the door for anyone interested in making their mark on Tribe in a very real way. Show us your best designs for the Members icon, and you could win a spot for your icon in the masthead. There's also a $100 Amazon.com gift certificate for grabs, to sweeten the deal.
The full details are at the Members Icon Design Contest tribe, but here are the basics:
- Enter your design by Friday, April 7th, 2006
- Enter by uploading one image per design to the Members Icon Design tribe
- Enter as many times as you like
Hey Guys,

We just published the 2006 Telefilm New Voices Call for Submissions at our website - its a PDF you can download from http://www.dx.org/digifest .

I'm sure you all have interesting projects that would be great for submission so I thought to twig you on... :)

Here's some info:

--

digifest has gone mod! The ‘mod’ theme - short for modern in the ‘60s - and currently used to mean modification - reveals inspiring and surprising innovations in digital design, art and cultural expression.

We invite you to participate in digifest 2006: mods, an interdisciplinary festival of the best in innovative new media, art and design from Canada and abroad. This year participants will have the opportunity to express the individual’s role within larger systems, be they political, social or corporate, through their own unique and personalized modifications to off-the-shelf products. Modification possibilities may range from personal computers to clothing; from podcasts to public space; from video games and cell phones to cars or dwellings. The do-it-yourself aspect of this year’s digifest means that the range of modifications is endless, with creativity leading the way in unconventional expression.

Each year 8-12 winners of the juried digifest New Voices call are invited to Toronto, Canada to showcase their work at one of digifest’s high-profile venues, which include Harbourfront Centre, Ontario Science Centre and Design Exchange. In 2006 we will showcase the most innovative transitions in product design from “modern” to “modification.” Work by selected presenters will be installed or displayed. Get your submission in today!

Hey tribe art community!

I'm looking for [a] serious artist[s] to collaborate with on a on Occult project, specifically the creation of a new Tarot deck with reworking of the original cards plus a whole slew of new major arcana. I am a dedicated student of the Occult and no mean researcher. I also have access to the kind of private libraries which can provide a rather endless wealth of the type of information, pictorial and otherwise, needed for this project. I have already done quite a bit of work on this concept, and am looking for an artists to collaborate on the project with me.

The ideal artist[s] would have some occult interests of their own but no fixed notions of what a 'proper' deck would contain. . . The right artist would be excited to illustrate the cards, just as I am excited to provide conceptual guidance and feedback as to the symbolic content of the images and write an accompanying pamphlet/book designed to explicate the cards. The artist would need to have an elegant and subtle style which lends itself to Occult materials, and a focus on details so as to be able to convey subtle symbolism. I am also looking for someone who is a serious and reliable person -- I take this very seriously, so don't reply unless you are prepared to as well.

There would, of course, be no pay up front, but good tarot decks sell very well and the project could conceivably become quite lucrative -- most of the decks out there are damn ugly in my opinion, and most of them are poorly conceived of and researched. I have some tenuous connections to the world of professional publishing and whatnot, but the product would have to stand on its own merits. The project would also, if successful, really raise the profile of the artist involved, perhaps to an international level.

My conceptual work is sound and compelling, and I need a gifted artist to help me reify it. Are you that person?

-david

p.s. Also, I'd love to find someone in the Portland, Oregon area, but with the wonders of the internet, this is not an absolute requirement.

p.p.s. I posted this in a couple of different tribe, so if this is the second time you have seen it, please accept my sincere apologies for the waste of valuable seconds of your precious time.

Hello all you QX6ers....I haven't used Quark since backin the day, when 4.11 was the bomb. One thing I remember and love, I cannot seem to do in 6- automatically opening an image file in its native program (or "publisher")...this is all mac, BTW.

this used to be done by double-clicking the pic with the content tool (the hand/cursor thing, 2nd one down on the palette), and up would pop a box titled "Subscriber To: imagename.eps" that had options like "get editions manually/automatically," "cancel subscriber," and "open publisher".

If you clicked "open publisher" it would magically take you to the TIF or EPS file- no going to find it or wondering if you got the right one.

So, does anyone know how to make this happen in QX6? I am doing a book (started by someone else, otherwise I'd be using InDesign!!!!) with a zillion subtly different placed images, and a file nomenclature nightmare. All I can say is....help!

Thanks in advance-

So, do you guys get a licensing fee for most of your work or is it just a one time buy out?

Let's say Sony comes and wants that new logo and package design for something that is going to be seen by, oh lets say, 20 million people.

You are a creative person and come up with a logo in a week, after research, and another week on the package. You charge $80 an hour, therefore, $6,400 +/-

Do you stop there or is there a licensing fee? The reason I ask is because when I do commercial photography, there is studio fee, my fee, and my photo licensing fee based on use rights. A 10,000 circulation publication does not get as large a licensing fee as a 1,000,000 circulation publication. Just like it costs less for an ad in a citywide magazine as it does for TIME magazine.

I was just wondering.

Sorry for the cross-posting ahead of time; I'm in such a time crunch that I'm posting this on the InDesign tribe as well.

Here I am, finally finishing a magazine to get it off to the printer. Remember, I am new at managing a WHOLE mag myself (and for a pittance—don't ask!). And it's the first seriously multi-page doc I've done in InDesign (but thankfully I have a cookbook right behind it.)

Everything looks fine (mostly) onscreen.

When I did a report, it said 29 of these fonts were "embedded" in PDFs like so:

69 Fonts Used; 0 Missing, 29 Embedded, 0 Incomplete, 0 Protected

- Name: Acanthus-Italic; Type: Type 1, Status: Embedded
Filename: NA
Full Name: Acanthus-Italic
First Used on Page: First Used on Page: 35 (PDF) Countertop.pdf
Protected: No

These are supposed to be hi-res PDF ads people sent me; I don't have all their fonts. Do I need to include them? They sent them as PDF files.

In another instance I have this kind of thing:

- Name: izzy's steak house.eps; Type: EPS; Status: Linked
Filename: izzy's steak house.eps
Link Updated: Wed, Jan 26, 2005 7:25 PM
File Last Modified: Wed, Jan 26, 2005 7:25 PM
Complete Name: Violet Central Deux:Desktop Folder:A La Carte:SF A LA CARTE EPS:izzy's steak house.eps
Link Profile: None
On Page 15

I told the previous designer to send them to me as OUTLINED EPS files so I wouldn't need all 6 thousand goofy fonts these people put in their menus. They looked outlined when I opened them in Illustrator. But when I looked at these pages in Acrobat they looked bitmappy. Have they been outlined? If so, why do I need the fonts?? Again, these look fine onscreen.

Any assistance you can give me is very appreciated.

OH! I have another question:
I have some transparent objects (3 of them according to the report; I think they're PDFs)...is there something I'm supposed to do with them so they come out right in the final printing?

Molto Grazie,
Vi

HENRY WOLF, GRAPHIC DESIGNER
Led U.S. Magazine Design In '50s, '60s

By Steven Heller
New York Times

NEW YORK - Henry Wolf, the graphic designer and photographer who, as art director of Esquire, Harper's Bazaar and Show magazines in the 1950s and '60s, held sway over American periodical design, died Feb. 14 at his apartment in Manhattan. He was 79.

He was found dead by his assistant, though the cause of death has not yet been determined, said a friend, the designer Ivan Chermayeff.

Few magazine art directors at the time wielded more creative control than Wolf, who was known for his bold yet simple use of expressive typography, surreal photography and conceptual illustration. Rather than accept the typical role of an acquiescent layout artist, he closely collaborated with editors to define their magazines' personalities. He selected typefaces, commissioned pictorial features from well-known or newly discovered photographers and illustrators and decided what to feature on covers.

``Henry had an intuitive but acute intelligence,'' said his former assistant at Esquire, film director Robert Benton. ``You could see the thought in his layouts. Anything that didn't have meaning was cut out.''

Wolf was often outspoken on the state of magazines in general, and quick to note that good content was neutralized when editorial material and design were not in sync. ``An enlightened despot would be a big help in publishing,'' he said in a speech titled ``What's Wrong With Magazines,'' published in Print magazine in 1965. He insisted, ``A magazine should not only reflect a trend; it should help start it.''

Wolf joined the advertising agency McCann Erikson's Center for Advanced Practice in 1965 and later became creative director of Trahey/Wolf Advertising. By 1971, after determining that there were no more magazines for him to design, Wolf devoted himself to advertising and editorial photography and opened Henry Wolf Productions. He photographed elegant fashion layouts and still lifes for clients like Saks Fifth Avenue and I. Magnin, as well as advertisements for Xerox, IBM, Revlon and DeBeers.

Wolf taught magazine design and photography at the School of Visual Arts, Cooper Union and the Parsons School of Design. He received the American Institute of Graphic Arts Medal for Lifetime Achievement in 1976 and was inducted into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame in 1980.

In 1951 he became an art director for the U.S. State Department, designing publications and posters for overseas use. The next year he took a job in Esquire's promotion art department as a junior art director.

Five months later, in a move that surprised his peers and himself, he was promoted to Esquire's graphics editor. At 26, he was one of the youngest design stewards at any national magazine. Wolf took two years to refashion the magazine into exactly what he wanted.

In 1958 Wolf succeeded Alexey Brodovitch at Harper's Bazaar. In 1961 he became art director of a progressive new arts magazine, Show, where his covers were noteworthy for their pictorial wit and elegance.
