If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate so much!

I can create a symbol and save it temporarily into symbols file, but when I close the project and start a new one, it's gone.????? Why?

Also, in the swatches, I am wondering if it's possible to change the "black and white radial" swatch to a different color?

Thank you so much for your help!

I am but a novice at this.... I just spent 4 hours trying to figure it out and I can not. I've printed out the "help section", but even still I can not find the proper answer.

:-(

ps: I have a P.C.

  • Hi Lhana

caught up doing "stuff" at the moment so can't try it...
but I think you will need to save the single "symbol" you have created as an ai file
and save it (or put it) into the symbol folder - which is in the presets folder - which is in the application folder

I will try this later - but it should work - the symbols are just ai graphics :)

as for the radial - just pull up the "gradient" pallet - and you just drag any colour you want from the
swatches onto the pointer markers under the blend strip

just had a play... when you have got the symbol in the symbols pallet...
from the symbols pallet you need to "Save Symbol Library" give it a new name
then when you open a new file - you need to load that symbol library
from the symbols pallet (at the bottom of the menue) under "Open Symbol Library"
on my puter it appears under "user defined"
    • Thank you so much for your time.....

I simply cannot find the "symbols Library"? There is alot of other options but the "Library" is not there.

I will keep looking. In the meantime I will try to save my symbols as an AI and stick it into the symbol folder.

      Thanks again!

      xo

      • hello again

what version of illustrator are you using?

cos I have just tried opening some of the symbols up
and I can't ... but I know you could do that in sc2 (cos I did)
in sc3 the ai file seems to be coding

not sure what happened with the library!
on sc3 its the bottom option (last entry) in the sub menue
(which is the three small horizontal lines and a tiny triangle in the top right of the symbols pallet - (or any pallet)

has it dropped off - you've been working too hard

have just tried saving (any graphic you make up) as an ai file into the symbols folder
in the applications folder - and it did work - but you do need to go into the sub menu
and use the Open Symbol Library option - and it will be there under the User Defined option
  • What you need to do is either

A: Save your symbol as its own library by going to the options menu of the Symbol palette (the arrow in the upper right hand corner) and choose "Save Symbol Library..."

    or

B: (If you want the same handful of symbols to appear every time.) Create a new document with your desired symbols and save it as "Adobe Illustrator Startup_CMYK.ai" or "Adobe Illustrator Startup_RGB.ai" in the Plug-ins folder. (Make sure you back up the original files first.

This is also in the help guide under Drawing: Symbols: To create symbol libraries.
