Re: newbie to indesign: metallic inks?
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 10:14 PMGo to the swatches pallette, select "add a new swatch" and under the color mode you should have the pantone metallics swatch library loaded. Select that as your color mode. It will give you a list of all the metallics - double click on the ink you want to use. Make sure that your color type is "spot". Then make the text that color using the swatch you just created. voila. you're done. -

Fri, October 26, 2007 - 12:43 AMam I suppose to sacrifice a lamb in your general direction?
that was awesome. thank you very much.
follow-up: as I send in the pdf file to the printer - will it hold that info? -

Re: newbie to indesign: metallic inks?
Fri, October 26, 2007 - 8:54 AMAbsolutely. I would suggest printing a Post Script file and distilling it in Acrobat if you have it. Otherwise, go to Export > Adobe PDF presets > PDF X1a and you will make an x1a standard compliant PDF that should print just fine.
Is this a 5 color job? -

Re: newbie to indesign: metallic inks?
Fri, October 26, 2007 - 2:09 PMA grey that's a CMYK build can't be just replaced by the printer, because it appears on all 4 plates. But you could always use any color as a "spot" swatch and tell your printer that that 5th plate should use whatever ink you mean the spot color to represent. -

Sat, December 1, 2007 - 7:37 PMWdat properties does PDF X1a have that make it the setting for this?

Re: newbie to indesign: metallic inks?
Mon, December 3, 2007 - 11:42 AMThese properties are all set in your swatch palette. The PDFx1a will separate your spot colors out into separate plates named with the ink you selected in your swatches, but to be 1000% safe I would also identify the desired inks to your printer. -

Re: newbie to indesign: metallic inks?
Mon, December 3, 2007 - 11:44 AMYes, an aqueous spot should be treated the same way. Unless its an aqueous flood coat and then it wouldn't require a plate.
All you're doing with this whole "spot color" thing is identifying to the image setter to make a separate plate....doesn't have to be a "color" per se, just its own plate on the press. -
