Re: KEYLINE? BLUELINE? ...HELP?
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 2:47 PMYou can't get a blueline from InDesign.
Bluelines are provided by your printer and represent the films that will be used to make the actual printing plates.
Are they perhaps asking for separations?

Re: KEYLINE? BLUELINE? ...HELP?
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 3:42 PMBluelines are inexpensive blue-toned composites of the printing plates used for proofing. They look similar to the final printed piece, but are completely made up of blue tones. There are no other colors. They are provided by your print vendor and cannot be gotten from InDesign.
Keylines are thin lines, usually a bounding box, and can be made in InDesign by various methods depending upon the shape -- pen tool, circle and square tool, line tool, etc.

Re: KEYLINE? BLUELINE? ...HELP?
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 5:31 PMYou're welcome. But, hey, there's this thing called Google. It's easy to use and you'll find what you need with a simple search. Here's a couple of results for "printing terms."
www.printindustry.com/glossary.htm
www.printusa.com/glos.htm
You'll have to do some of your own homework now. Good luck.

Seriously though, there are tons or resources on the web, from general information to tutorials. It really depends on where you want to concentrate.
Here's one more spot that links to various other tutorials and information sites:

It's a continuing process. Be patient. I wish you well on your journey. -

Re: KEYLINE? BLUELINE? ...HELP?
Sat, December 1, 2007 - 7:47 PMHey Guys,
Thanks again!
A little background: I found myself "in" a little over my head and having to scramble in a temp job at a magazine with not a lot of time to research these topics properly on my own. I thought I knew what I needed to know for this gig, and I do know most of it, just not some of the finer pre-press process issues. All and all its been a great learning experience so far. -

Re: KEYLINE? BLUELINE? ...HELP?
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 10:47 PMHey Bailey!
I was put in this temp position by the agency that I was signed with, I was under the impression that I would be assisting an art director with production work. The gig was a Building industry magazine where the art director and managing editor had left with in the last two weeks. I, having a significant amount of experience with ads and packaging design, had took a class in InDesign and Illustrator and thought...well, I'm set for the print industry.
I find myself in the office next to the computer I'm to use and I'm sweating bullets...I was to be the Art Director. What have I done, did I mis-represent myself? And, they are passing phrases by me, like the ones I've listed, I was more than a little nervous. Luckily, with the exceptions of the jargon I was unfamiliar with (which I was able to get answers for here), I was equal to the task and it went off well.
So it was a happy ending after all.
