I was just wondering if is there anybody in here has ever learned graphic and/or web design on their own? I mean not going to college for it or anything. I am currently going to college and frankly I sometimes I feel like I am not getting much out of it. The instructors seem to leave us on our own and expect us to get it all right the first time. Also, they seem to lean more towards a pro-business, pro-corporate side of the field. It's something I am not too into. I am more interested in the artistic and creative side. My overall goal is get together with 2 or 3 other like minded designers and start our own collective.
I was wondering if anybody has done this and what tips they might have? I am not happy with the current situation I find myself in. Thanks in advance.

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Tue, February 5, 2008 - 6:39 AMDrop out of school, take an internship at a printer first, then ad agency.
I am $47,000 in debt from school. I graduated in 1997. I did not learn one thing that pertains to work from school. -

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 8:24 AMThe only way I am going to drop out is if my GPA is sub par and then I am out. I have not given up just yet. However, I am seriously considering changing majors to Fine Arts. I seem to get more out of that than I do this Graphic Design course. I am also considering taking up Graphic Design at Portland Community College in about a year or two. Maybe a program at a different school would be better.

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Tue, February 5, 2008 - 12:15 PMPersonally, I think you need to know the very basics and then only then start with an Internship at a local printing company that they are more than happy to accommodate some one that they don't have to reimburse for being an apprentice. If you're going to be working in the Design "business" you need to know how everything is put together specially with colors.
Some Internships are payed but you have to start that way to understand the "Graphic" business.
Happy trails... -

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 8:42 AMThat would be a good idea too. Sadly, the market here in Spokane is such that there isn't much of an opportunity for internships which is why I am eager to make the move from here. I have to get better on my graphic design skills of course. I have heard of some cases where even self-taught people have made it in the Graphic Design world so I tend to think that it is possible.

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Tue, February 5, 2008 - 4:47 PMJPX,
You don't say where you're going to school or what type of program you're enrolled in -- 4 year university, 2 year technical college, an art school like RISD, Art Center, or what.
That being said, and after reading your post and the two current replies, I thought I 'd throw my 2¢ in.
Internships and apprenticeships are great. School is great as well, but one or the other isn't going to give you everything you want or need. The internships and apprenticeships are going to give you a lot of technical and practical skills and knowledge. On the other hand, school is where you'll learn theory, the history of design and also have the opportunity for more creative freedom of the kind you seem to be desiring. Because frankly, it's going to be difficult, if not impossible to make a living as a designer and avoid the business/corporate world. They're the one's with the need and the money to pay you. You'll probably have to do the artistic coop on the side, unless of course, you don't need to earn a living as a designer.
So, I'd advise you to both seek an education and do the internships and apprenticeships if that's a possibility for you. It may be the program you're in is a lousy one and that's causing your frustration. Check out the programs at other schools, talk to the instructors and people currently enrolled in the program at various levels. See what they say, and go from there.
Best of luck. -

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 8:14 AMI am enrolled at Spokane Falls Community College. It's a 2 year program but I had extended it to 3 years since I wanted to focus on my electives and self-paced software courses. Also, I am a slow learner and they tend to move too fast.

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 7:22 PMSounds like you are not in an appropriate school or school is not for you.?
Leaving you on your own can be a good thing if you push yourself and use your instructors as resources. Design is all about business... It's not an art form (depending on who u talk to).
I train a lot of people who want to be "designers" and did not participate in a design program in college. I recommend getting a good base knowledge, and grow from there... Take at least a few classes... typography, color theory & history of graphic design.
You have to have the drive to learn the trade... Design is not only about creating something artistic & creative, it is also about function & working with the medium...

Fri, February 8, 2008 - 5:59 AMAnd paying clients usually do not appreciate your artistic talent at all.

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 11:33 AMInteresting that you brought all of the aspects of the business up. I am in our college's Graphic Design Club. A couple of weeks ago, we had a guy from one of the local graphic design studios as a guest speaker. He considered graphic designers to be more "salespeople". I thought "oh great!" because I am not salesperson material in fact, I am more introverted than that. It requires a certain person to be a salesperson and it just isn't me. I think our school's program needs to be more measured and balanced in it's lesson plans. It tends to rely too much on the business end of things. Only my opinion! I am just here to get some knowledge and useful information to hone my skills.
My definition of graphic design is function and art with a lot of imagination. You must convey the client's message through the medium. That is part and parcel of the industry. I suppose people have varied viewpoints of what graphic design is about and I am the type of person who is not conventional in anything I do. I suppose that's part of the problem but that's just the way I am.
Thanks for the advice.

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 10:21 AMSure. In fact, that can be a far more focused and accelerated shortcut to the real deal. But it can also be a bit of a hobble if and when trying to launch a career in the employee circuit. -

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 8:00 PMMy boss was just saying the other day how he wished he had more business training before he launched into a business. He said he made terrible financial mistakes because he only had art training in schools. He has a masters of fine arts in graphic design and has owned a advertising agency in new orleans for 25 years. -

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 8:20 AMThat's why I took a "How To Start A Small Business" class last quarter. It gave me a lot of insight on how to get started on running a business, the advantages, disadvantages, and all that stuff. I know that the graphic design business involves a lot of deadlines and time devoted to it but the way this course is structured is such that I am not getting a lot out of it. I am not going to give up the program yet but I tend to think I would be better off learning all this on my own. There would be a lot of trial and error but I think it would be to my advantage rather than feel stressed and constrained. -

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 2:45 PMI got a BA in graphic design. and everything i need to know, i learned on my own.
i got the degree from a cal state though, not a real art school.
either way, noone has ever asked me for a degree, all you need is a portfolio.
you will make many mistakes and you will learn from them and not make them again.
I say unless you go to a good art school. don't bother. -

Re: D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 12:08 AMIt seems that all school is really good for is giving you the base skills and the vocabulary to speak intelligently about design. The real education begins when you land that first real job, then schools really in session.
